Govt aims to increase public health spending to 2.5% of GDP

Seeks to reduce fertility rate, increase life expectancy

by Janhavi Behere

The Cabinet approved a national health policy aimed at providing affordable health-care facility. Health minister J.P. Nadda outlined the policy’s objective of increasing public health spending to 2.5 per cent of GDP from the current 1.4 per cent in a time-bound manner. The government aims to improve life expectancy from the current 67.5 years to 70 years by 2025. Another goal of the government is to reduce the total fertility rate from current 2.3 to 2.1 by 2025. The policy seeks to move to a more proactive ‘thrust on prevention and health promotion’ and provide more thrust on the role of yoga and traditional medicines in disease prevention.
