Over 50 FPIs shift base to tax-friendly nations after new tax pacts

Plan fresh investments from new locations

Over 50 foreign portfolio investors (FPIs) are shifting base to tax-friendly European countries such as France and Netherlands, as reported by Business Standard. The move comes after the government re-negotiated tax treaties with Mauritius and Singapore. Under the re-negotiated India-Mauritius and India-Singapore treaties, the tax on short-term capital gains is 7.5 per cent for two years and 15 per cent subsequently. However, tax treaties with European countries do not provide for any tax on short-term capital gains. Investment vehicles in Mauritius and Singapore, which account for nearly a third of portfolio inflows, might not completely shut down. Overseas investors are, however, planning fresh investments from new locations. The government will re-negotiate tax treaties with other countries if they are misused to escape tax.
