NSSO's latest survey to quiz household consumers about e-commerce activities

Survey to help govt in better understanding of industry

by Arjit Singh Bhambra

The National Sample Survey Organisation (NSSO), in its questionnaire for the 74th round survey, has included a question about the use of e-commerce websites as a part of usual household transactions. According to TCA Anant, chief statistician and secretary to the ministry of statistics & programme implementation, the intent is to study the exposure of households to the e-commerce industry at a consumer level. The household survey along with B2C (business-to-consumer) and B2B (business-to-business) data from the eight million assesses on the GST network is likely to help the government in better understanding of the industry. While no official estimates on e-commerce sales in the country is available, it is considered to be one of the fastest growing markets in the world and is likely to touch USD 33 billion in 2017-18 after growing by 19 per cent in 2016-17, as per a report in Hindu Business Line.
