Rationalisation of rates for some items on GST council's meeting agenda

May merge forms GSTR-1, GSTR-2 & GSTR-3 into one

by Nidhi Bhati

The GST council may consider lowering rates for bio-diesel buses, electric vehicles, irrigation equipment and digital cameras in their upcoming meeting to be held on 18 January 2018, as per a report in Business Standard. While rate for irrigation equipment may be reduced to 12 per cent from 18 per cent, that for bio-diesel vehicles, electric vehicles and digital cameras can be lowered to 18 per cent from 28 per cent. Simplification of the invoice matching process to prevent tax evasion and revenue leakages under the composition scheme along with convergence of three forms, GSTR-1, GSTR-2 and GSTR-3 into one is also on the council’s agenda. The panel may adopt a new definition of handicrafts and reduce GST rate for jobwork on handicraft items to five per cent. It is also likely to unveil a number of provisions related to exports and special economic zones.
