Centre examining need for monetisation of deficit

by Nidhi Bhati

The central government is reviewing the option of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) monetising the deficit during October 2020-March 2021, a government official told Economic Times. The official explained that since there is an uncertainty on how long the pandemic will last, the government is not keen on taking any decision so early in the financial year. For now, the government is looking to meet the expenditure for the period April-September 2020 through market borrowing and spending re-prioritisation for various ministries. The RBI’s monetisation of the fiscal deficit broadly means the central bank printing currency for the government to take care of any emergency spending and to bridge its fiscal deficit. This option is resorted to under emergency situations.
