Bibek Debroy calls for reprioritisation of public expenditure on health, decentralisation

by Nidhi Bhati

Chairman of the Prime Minister’s Economic Council Bibek Debroy has called for reprioritisation of public expenditure on health as well as decentralisation in view of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic crisis. Stating that there is heterogeneity of governance in India, Debroy emphasised on the importance of decentralising indicators. The Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation (MoSPI) secretary Pravin Srivastava added that the traditional data collection mechanisms will face challenges and adapt to the situation. To improve data quality, a generalised survey solution for more intelligent data capturing using mobile devices, e-Sigma, is being launched and it will be augmented by telephonic and web-based interviews.
