Centre mulls raising Rs.200 bln from stake sale in CIL, IDBI Bank

by Nidhi Bhati

The central government is planning to raise Rs.200 bln by selling its stake in Coal India and IDBI Bank to boost the sagging economy, as per industry sources. In case of Coal India, if valuations are not attractive, the company will buy back shares from the government, they said. The government holds more than 66 per cent in Coal India. It had previously sold a 10 per cent stake in January 2015, mopping up Rs.225.5 billion. In February 2020, the government had planned to raise Rs.2.1 trillion by selling state assets in a bid to keep the budget deficit at 3.5 per cent of GDP. However, the Covid-19 pandemic derailed the budget goals.
