by Nidhi Bhati

On 31 July 2020, the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Labour submitted its final report on the Code on Social Security, 2019. The code seeks to subsume nine laws related to social security of workers. In its final report, the committee has sought a definite road map towards a right-based social security cushion for all workers and has asked the government to give a specific time-frame for effective implementation of the scheme. It has also pitched for unemployment insurance and reducing continuous service period to one year from five years for getting gratuity. The panel also sought more clarity on the source of funding for running social security schemes mentioned in the Code.
