Centre unlikely to meet Rs.2.1 tln divestment target for 2020-21

by Nidhi Bhati

The central government is likely to miss its ambitious Rs.2.1 trillion disinvestment target for 2020-21, given the current market situation arising out of disruption caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. Of Rs.2.1 trillion, Rs.900 billion is expected to come from disinvestment of government stake in public sector banks and financial institutions including listing of Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) while the balance Rs.1.2 trillion will be raised through sale of stake in central public sector enterprises (CPSEs). The government is looking to sell its entire 53.3 per cent stake in Bharat Petroleum Corp (BPCL), 100 per cent in Air India and 30.8 per cent of its 54.8 per cent stake in Container Corporation of India. As per industry sources, the much-delayed Air India privatisation is unlikely this year too, because the aviation industry has been one of the worst hit due to the pandemic and is unlikely to recover to pre-Covid levels soon.
