World Bank discontinues publication of ease of doing business report

The World Bank Group has decided to discontinue publication of its ‘Doing Business’ report on country investment climates after an internal audit found irregularities in the 2018 and 2020 editions. According to the investigation, top World Bank officials, including then chief executive officer (CEO) Kristalina Georgieva, applied undue pressure on staff to change the report’s methodology to boost China’s score. China’s ranking in the Doing Business 2018 report rose seven places to 78th after the data methodology changes were made, compared with the initial draft report. However, International Monetary Fund (IMF) chief Kristalina Georgieva has denied having any role in boosting China’s ranking in World Bank’s 2018 report.
