India's USD 5 trillion economy goal achievable by 2027-28: Economists

Economists opine that size of the Indian economy could cross the USD 5 trillion mark by 2027-28 if the imminent recession in the West is short-lived, crude oil prices do not rise further and a cycle of widening fiscal and current account deficits is pre-empted, reported Financial Express. Bank of Baroda’s chief economist Madan Sabnavis is of the view that the number of years to the USD 5 trillion goal will depend on the growth momentum. According to him, emphasis should be on job creation to increase income, which would further raise consumption. Sabnavis believes that having a 9-10 real GDP growth is the real challenge as compared to growing at 15 per cent per annum in nominal terms. India Ratings’ chief economist DK Pant stated that a combination of real GDP growth, inflation and rupee depreciation will have a strong impact on achieving the targets. Assuming four per cent depreciation of rupee vis-a-vis the US dollar, India would need nearly 14 per cent nominal GDP growth between 2021-22 and 2023-24 period to become a USD 5 trillion economy by 2026-27. ICRA’s chief economist Aditi Nayar expects the Indian economy to achieve the USD 5 trillion threshold by 2026-27 or 2027-28.
