A new paper published by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has concluded that there is no definitive evidence to show that inflation targeting policies by central banks actually work in bringing down inflation. The paper stated that while early adopters of inflation targeting (IT) in the pre-2000 period all saw declines in their respective inflation rates following adoption, only half the subsequent adopters of this policy have met with success in controlling inflation. It also pointed out that there is no significant evidence to show IT adoption improves macroeconomic performance.
